The 5th Missile Battalion was established during the height of the Cold War as part of the United States Army Air Defense Command. Activated in the late 1950s, the unit was initially equipped with Nike Hercules surface-to-air missiles to defend strategic locations against potential Soviet bomber attacks. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the 5th Missile Battalion maintained a high level of readiness, participating in numerous training exercises and technological upgrades. The unit was eventually deactivated as advances in missile technology and changes in defense strategy rendered its mission obsolete, marking the end of its distinguished service.
