The **55th Aviation Unit "Dragon Flight"** was an elite helicopter unit formed during the Vietnam War, originally attached to the 1st Aviation Brigade of the United States Army. Activated in the mid-1960s, the unit was renowned for its daring gunship missions, flying UH-1 Hueys and later AH-1 Cobras to provide close air support and escort for troop insertions and resupply operations. The "Dragon Flight" earned a reputation for bravery and effectiveness, participating in major campaigns such as the Tet Offensive and operations throughout the Central Highlands. Their distinctive dragon insignia became a symbol of their fierce combat spirit, and the unit’s legacy endures among Army aviation veterans.
