The 553rd Supply & Service Battalion was activated on 12 July 1966 at Fort Hood, Texas, in response to logistical demands during the Vietnam War. The battalion deployed to Vietnam in October 1966, where it provided critical supply, maintenance, and service support to U.S. Army operations, primarily in the III and IV Corps Tactical Zones. The unit played a vital role in sustaining combat effectiveness by ensuring the delivery of essential materials such as food, fuel, and equipment repair. After distinguished service in Vietnam, the battalion was inactivated in the early 1970s as part of postwar drawdowns.
