The 5th Squadron, 117th Cavalry Regiment (5/117th Cav) traces its lineage to cavalry units in the New Jersey Army National Guard, with origins dating back to the late 19th century. Over the years, the unit has served in various forms, including participation in both World Wars and Cold War-era homeland defense missions. In the early 21st century, the 5/117th Cavalry was reorganized as part of the 42nd Infantry Division and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing reconnaissance and security operations. The squadron was inactivated in 2008 as part of Army transformation efforts, with its lineage and honors carried forward by successor units in the New Jersey National Guard.
