The 49th Missile Defense Battalion is a key unit of the United States Army, activated in 2004 and stationed at Fort Greely, Alaska. Tasked with operating the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, the battalion provides homeland missile defense against limited long-range ballistic missile threats.
