The 49th Missile Defense Battalion is a key unit of the United States Army, activated in 2004 and stationed at Fort Greely, Alaska. Tasked with operating the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system, the battalion provides homeland missile defense against limited long-range ballistic missile threats. Composed primarily of Alaska Army National Guard soldiers, the unit works closely with the US Northern Command and the Missile Defense Agency. The 49th has played a crucial role in maintaining continuous readiness and advancing missile interception capabilities to protect the continental United States.
