The 490th Component Maintenance Squadron (CMS), later redesignated as the Equipment Maintenance Squadron (EMS), was an integral unit within the United States Air Force. Activated during the Cold War, the squadron provided specialized maintenance support for aircraft systems and equipment at Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. Throughout its service, the 490th CMS/EMS ensured operational readiness for B-52 Stratofortress and later B-1B Lancer bombers by maintaining avionics, electronic warfare, and aircraft components. The unit played a crucial role in sustaining the mission effectiveness of the 7th Bomb Wing until its inactivation as part of Air Force restructuring in the 1990s.
