The 479th Chemical Battalion was constituted on 13 January 1945 in the Army of the United States and activated on 26 January 1945 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The unit originally served during World War II, providing chemical support and training in the use of chemical weapons and defense measures. After inactivation post-war, the battalion was allotted to the Army Reserve and reactivated several times, most notably at locations in Michigan and later in Illinois. The 479th Chemical Battalion has since served as a key U.S. Army Reserve unit, specializing in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) defense capabilities.
