The 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as "The Old Guard," is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the United States Army, having been established in 1784. Stationed at Fort Myer, Virginia, The Old Guard serves as the official ceremonial unit and escort to the President of the United States. The unit is renowned for its precision drill, participation in national ceremonies, and its sacred duty of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. In addition to its ceremonial responsibilities, The Old Guard is capable of infantry missions in support of national defense.
