3:8th Cavalry

• The 3/8th Cavalry was originally activated in 1867 as the 8th Cavalry, later redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 8th Cavalry in 1963. • During World War I, the 3/8th Cavalry participated in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, one of the largest operations of the war. • In World War II, the battalion fought in the Pacific Theater, participating in campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. • The 3/8th Cavalry was one of the first units to deploy to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. • The battalion later returned to Iraq in 2005-2006 for a second deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. • In 2010, the 3/8th Cavalry deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, conducting counterinsurgency operations in Kunar province. • The 3/8th Cavalry is known for its distinctive unit insignia, featuring a yellow shield with a blue saltire, crossed sabers, and a black Indian head. • The battalion has a long history of participating in ceremonial events, such as parades and color guard details. • Several members of the 3/8th Cavalry have been awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroism in combat. • The 3/8th Cavalry has a strong reputation for its training and readiness, regularly conducting exercises and simulations to prepare for future missions.
