The 3rd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment (3/5th Infantry), known as part of the “Bobcats,” traces its lineage back to the 5th Infantry Regiment, established in 1808. The battalion has seen action in numerous major conflicts, including the Indian Wars, the Civil War, the Philippine-American War, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, where it earned several unit citations for valor. During the Vietnam War, 3/5th Infantry was attached to the 9th Infantry Division and played a significant role in riverine and counterinsurgency operations in the Mekong Delta. In modern times, the battalion has continued to serve with distinction in the Global War on Terrorism, deploying to both Iraq and Afghanistan as part of larger Army formations.
