2nd Med Battalion 2nd FSSG

• Origins: The 2nd Medical Battalion, now part of 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group (formerly 2nd Force Service Support Group or 2nd FSSG), was originally activated in December 1940 at San Diego, California, as the 2nd Medical Battalion, 2nd Marine Brigade. • World War II Service: The battalion participated in major campaigns during World War II, including Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa, providing critical medical support in some of the fiercest battles in the Pacific. • Reactivation at Camp Lejeune: After World War II, the unit was deactivated, but reactivated in October 1949 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where it remains based to this day. • Korean War Support: Although not deployed as a unit to Korea, 2nd Med Battalion played a key role in providing trained medical personnel and replacements for Marine units engaged in the Korean War. • Humanitarian Missions: The battalion has participated in several humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, notably in the Caribbean and Central America, providing medical care after hurricanes and other crises. • Modern Deployments: Members of the battalion have deployed in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as well as Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom, establishing and running field hospitals in combat zones. • Nickname: The unit is often referred to as "2nd Med," and is renowned within the Marine Corps for its “No Marine Left Behind” ethos and commitment to casualty care under fire. • Innovative Medical Training: 2nd Med Battalion has pioneered realistic combat medical training, including the use of live tissue training and advanced trauma simulators, to prepare corpsmen and Marines for battlefield conditions. • Support to NATO: Elements of the battalion have participated in joint exercises with NATO allies in Europe, enhancing interoperability and readiness for coalition operations. • Unit Awards: The battalion and its personnel have been awarded numerous unit commendations, including the Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Commendation, recognizing their outstanding performance and valor in times of war and peace.
