The 2nd Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment (2/77 Armor) was an armored battalion assigned to the 9th Infantry Division and stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, during the Cold War era. Reactivated in the late 1970s as part of the Army's expansion, the unit specialized in armored warfare and mechanized infantry support, training extensively with M60 and later M1 Abrams tanks. 2/77 Armor participated in major field exercises such as REFORGER and partnership training with allied forces, focusing on rapid deployment and combined arms tactics. The battalion remained an integral part of the 9th Division’s mechanized capabilities until its inactivation in the early 1990s as part of a post-Cold War Army drawdown.
