The 2nd Battalion, 56th Field Artillery (2/56th FA) traces its lineage to the 56th Field Artillery, first constituted during World War I as part of the National Army. Reactivated and reorganized multiple times, the battalion saw significant service during World War II, providing crucial artillery support in European campaigns. During the Cold War, the 2/56th FA was stationed in Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s nuclear-capable artillery units, serving under the 56th Field Artillery Brigade and later the 56th Field Artillery Command. The unit was deactivated following the end of the Cold War as part of the broader drawdown of U.S. forces in Europe.
