• The 24th Infantry Division was one of the first all-black divisions in the United States Army. • During World War II, the 24th Infantry Division fought in the Pacific Theater, participating in the Battle of Leyte and the Battle of Okinawa. • After World War II, the 24th Infantry Division was stationed in Japan as part of the occupation forces. • During the Korean War, the 24th Infantry Division was the first American unit to engage in combat with North Korean forces. • In 1951, the 24th Infantry Division was reorganized as a non-divisional unit and redesignated as a regiment. • The division was reactivated in 1955 and stationed in Germany as part of NATO forces during the Cold War. • In 1968, the 24th Infantry Division was deactivated and its units were transferred to other divisions. • The 24th Infantry Division was reactivated as a training division in 1989 and was responsible for training National Guard and Reserve units. • In 2006, the division was reorganized as the 24th Brigade Combat Team and served in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. • In 2019, the 24th Infantry Division was reactivated as a multi-component unit, with active-duty, National Guard, and Reserve components serving together.
