The 20th Aerial Surveillance Target Acquisition (ASTA) Detachment was a specialized unit within the United States Army, established during the Vietnam War era. Its primary mission was to provide aerial surveillance, target acquisition, and artillery adjustment support using light aircraft, typically the OV-1 Mohawk and O-1 Bird Dog. The unit played a crucial role in gathering real-time battlefield intelligence and directing artillery fire, significantly enhancing operational effectiveness for ground forces. The 20th ASTA Detachment's efforts contributed to improved situational awareness and the success of numerous combat operations during its deployment in Southeast Asia.
