The 1st Ranger Battalion, part of the U.S. Army’s elite 75th Ranger Regiment, was originally activated on June 19, 1942, at Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, during World War II. It gained fame for its daring amphibious assault at Pointe du Hoc during the D-Day invasion, scaling cliffs under heavy enemy fire. After World War II, the battalion was deactivated, but it was reactivated in 1974 at Fort Benning, Georgia, to serve as a premier light-infantry special operations force. Since then, the 1st Ranger Battalion has participated in numerous operations, including Grenada, Panama, Afghanistan, and Iraq, cementing its reputation as one of the most capable and versatile units in the U.S. military.
