The 1st Missile Battalion, 34th Artillery (1st Missile Bn, 34th Arty), was a United States Army unit activated during the Cold War era to provide surface-to-surface missile support. Equipped initially with the MGM-5 Corporal missile and later with the MGM-29 Sergeant missile system, the battalion played a vital role in the U.S. Army’s tactical missile forces in Europe. Stationed primarily in West Germany, the 1st Missile Battalion, 34th Artillery, was responsible for nuclear-capable missile operations as part of NATO’s deterrence strategy against the Soviet Union. The unit was eventually inactivated as missile technology and strategic doctrines evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
