1st Cavalry Division

• The 1st Cavalry Division was established in 1921 and is one of the most decorated divisions in the US Army. • During World War II, the division fought in the Pacific Theater including the battles of Guadalcanal and Leyte. • In the Vietnam War, the 1st Cavalry Division famously conducted air mobile operations using helicopters as a means of transportation and combat support. • During the Gulf War in 1991, the division played a key role in the ground offensive to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi forces. • The 1st Cavalry Division has also served in Iraq and Afghanistan during the wars in those countries. • The division's mascot is a horse named "Black Jack" which is named after General John J. Pershing's horse. • The division's motto is "First Team", reflecting its reputation for being at the forefront of combat operations. • The 1st Cavalry Division is nicknamed the "First Team" and its insignia features a black horse head on a yellow shield. • The division's headquarters are currently located at Fort Hood, Texas. • The 1st Cavalry Division has been awarded numerous campaign and unit citations for its service in various conflicts throughout its history.
