The 1st Battalion, 72d Armor Regiment (Mortars), traces its lineage to the formation of the 72d Tank Battalion during World War II, where it served with distinction in the Pacific Theater. Reactivated and redesignated several times, the battalion became an integral armored force within the 2nd Infantry Division, prominently serving in the Korean War and subsequent decades on the Korean Peninsula. Specializing in armored warfare, the battalion's mortar platoons provided vital indirect fire support to maneuver units during both training and real-world operations. Today, the 1st Battalion, 72d Armor continues its legacy of readiness and firepower as part of the U.S. Army’s forward-deployed forces in Korea.
