The 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment (Mechanized), traces its lineage to the 87th Infantry Regiment, activated in 1941 and distinguished in World War II’s Italian Campaign as part of the 10th Mountain Division. Reactivated during the Cold War, the battalion was reorganized as a mechanized infantry unit, equipped with armored vehicles to enhance mobility and firepower. It served with distinction in numerous training exercises and deployments, including peacekeeping missions and combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan during the Global War on Terrorism.
