The 178th Engineer Battalion is a unit of the South Carolina Army National Guard with a distinguished lineage dating back to its origins as an infantry unit in the early 20th century. Reorganized as an engineer battalion, the 178th has participated in a range of domestic and overseas missions, including combat deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion specializes in horizontal and vertical construction, route clearance, and combat engineering support, providing critical infrastructure and mobility to both military and civil authorities.
