• Origins and Activation: The 176th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) was originally constituted on 1 August 1944 in the Army of the United States as the 176th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile. • World War II Service: The battalion participated in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns during World War II, supporting Allied forces with crucial logistics and supply operations. • Post-War Inactivation and Reactivation: After World War II, the unit was inactivated in Germany in 1946, but later reactivated in the Army Reserve in 1948, and then inactivated again in 1952. • Transition to CSSB: The battalion was redesignated as the 176th Support Battalion in 1966, and later became the 176th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion under the modular force structure. • Alaska Assignment: The 176th CSSB is currently assigned to United States Army Alaska (USARAK), providing sustainment support to forces in the unique and challenging Arctic environment. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: The battalion deployed to Iraq in 2005-2006, providing logistical support for coalition forces, including fuel, maintenance, transportation, and supply operations. • Distinctive Unit Insignia: The unit’s insignia features a polar bear, referencing its Alaskan assignment and the battalion’s ability to operate in extreme cold-weather conditions. • Arctic Warrior Games: Soldiers of the 176th CSSB regularly participate in the annual Arctic Warrior Games, demonstrating their expertise in cold-weather survival and operations. • Humanitarian Missions: In addition to combat support, the battalion has supported humanitarian and disaster relief missions, such as providing aid during Alaskan natural disasters. • Motto: The battalion's motto is “Keep Them Moving,” highlighting its critical mission of sustaining and supporting combat forces wherever and whenever needed.
