The 174th Aviation Company, later known as the 174th Assault Helicopter Company, was an integral aviation unit of the Americal Division (23rd Infantry Division) during the Vietnam War. Activated in 1966, the unit provided vital air mobility, troop transport, and close air support across I Corps Tactical Zone in northern South Vietnam. Flying UH-1 "Huey" helicopters, the 174th gained distinction for its role in major operations such as Operation Wheeler/Wallowa and the defense of Chu Lai. The unit’s skilled pilots and crews earned numerous commendations for valor and professionalism before the unit’s deactivation in 1971 as part of the U.S. drawdown in Vietnam.
