The 15th Infantry Regiment was constituted in the United States Army in 1861 and has served with distinction for over 160 years. It saw its first major action during the American Civil War, participating in key battles such as Shiloh and Chickamauga. The regiment gained international recognition during its long deployment in China from 1912 to 1938, earning the nickname "Can Do" for its steadfast service. In World War II, the 15th Infantry fought valiantly with the 3rd Infantry Division across North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and into Germany, and continued to serve with distinction in Korea, the Balkans, and the Global War on Terrorism.
