• Origins: The 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery (1/487th FA) traces its lineage to the Hawaii Army National Guard's artillery traditions dating back to the early 20th century. • World War II Roots: The unit’s predecessors played a coastal defense role in Hawaii during WWII, protecting the islands after the Pearl Harbor attack. • Modernization: The 1/487th FA was one of the first National Guard artillery battalions to fully modernize with the M119A3 105mm howitzer, enhancing rapid deployment capabilities. • Multi-Ethnic Heritage: Like much of the Hawaii Army National Guard, the battalion reflects Hawaii’s diverse population, with many soldiers of Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese, Samoan, and other Pacific Islander descent. • Operation Iraqi Freedom: In 2004-2005, soldiers from the 1/487th FA were mobilized and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, performing security and convoy operations. • Disaster Response: The battalion has regularly assisted with state disaster responses, including hurricane relief, lava flow evacuations, and COVID-19 pandemic support. • Distinguished Alumni: Several former commanders and soldiers of the 1/487th FA have gone on to serve in high-level leadership roles within the Hawaii National Guard and state government. • Community Engagement: The unit is known for its community outreach, participating in parades, school visits, and cultural events across the Hawaiian Islands. • Training Excellence: The 1/487th FA regularly conducts live-fire artillery exercises at the Pohakuloa Training Area, maintaining high standards of gunnery proficiency. • Cultural Traditions: The battalion incorporates Hawaiian customs and traditions into its unit ceremonies, including the use of oli (chants) and the presentation of lei to honor achievements and milestones.
