The 11th Aviation Regiment, known as the "Thunderheads," was first constituted on 24 May 1966 in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 11th Aviation Group. It was activated on 1 July 1966 at Fort Benning, Georgia, and played a significant role during the Vietnam War, providing critical aerial support and reconnaissance missions. Over the years, the unit has undergone several reorganizations and redesignations, becoming the 11th Aviation Regiment in 1987. The 11th AVN Regt. has participated in multiple operations, including Operation Desert Storm, where it provided combat aviation support, solidifying its reputation as a vital combat aviation unit in the U.S. Army.
