The 116th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Stonewall Brigade," traces its origins to the Virginia militia in 1741, making it one of the oldest regiments in the U.S. Army. The unit fought with distinction in numerous conflicts, including the American Civil War as part of the Confederate Army under General Stonewall Jackson. During World War II, the 116th Infantry famously led the assault on Omaha Beach during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944, suffering heavy casualties but achieving its objectives. Today, the regiment is part of the Virginia Army National Guard and continues to serve with honor in both state and federal missions.
