The 1st Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment (1/10th Cav), known as the "Buffalo Soldiers," has a storied history dating back to its formation in 1866. During the Vietnam War, the Gun Platoon of 1/10th Cav served as the aerial weapons section, providing vital armed helicopter support for reconnaissance and security missions. Equipped with gunships such as the UH-1B/C "Huey" and later the AH-1 Cobra, the platoon played a key role in covering troop movements, extracting units under fire, and engaging enemy forces. The valor and effectiveness of the Gun Platoon contributed significantly to the squadron’s reputation for bravery and innovation throughout its deployments.
