USAFADS THUNDERBIRDS

• Founded in 1953: The USAF Air Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Thunderbirds, was officially activated on May 25, 1953, at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. • First Aircraft Used: The original team flew the straight-wing F-84G Thunderjet, before upgrading to the swept-wing F-84F Thunderstreak later that same year. • Origin of the Name: The name "Thunderbirds" pays homage to the legendary creature from Native American mythology, symbolizing power and strength. • First Supersonic Team: In 1956, the Thunderbirds became the world’s first supersonic aerial demonstration team, flying the F-100C Super Sabre. • International Ambassadors: The Thunderbirds have performed in over 60 countries and are considered ambassadors for the United States and the U.S. Air Force. • Unique "Diamond" Formation: Their signature "Diamond" four-jet formation, introduced in 1953, remains a highlight of their aerial displays. • Women in the Thunderbirds: In 2005, Major Nicole Malachowski became the first female pilot to fly with the Thunderbirds. • Aircraft Evolution: Over the years, the Thunderbirds have flown nine different aircraft, currently using the F-16 Fighting Falcon since 1983. • Public Service: In addition to airshows, the Thunderbirds participate in flyovers for major events and humanitarian missions, such as healthcare worker tribute flights during the COVID-19 pandemic. • Safety and Precision: Their intense training regimen and teamwork are crucial; the Thunderbirds have a perfect safety record during public demonstrations since 1982.
