TAFCW, USAFA

• TAFCW stands for Total Air Force Cadet Wing, which is the formal designation for the student body at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). • The Cadet Wing is organized like an operational Air Force wing, giving cadets real-world command experience through a military chain of command with groups, squadrons, and flights. • TAFCW consists of approximately 4,000 cadets, making it one of the largest student-run military organizations in the world. • The Cadet Wing is divided into four groups, each containing ten squadrons, for a total of 40 squadrons. • Every year, the Cadet Wing participates in the famous “Acceptance Day” parade, where new cadets are formally accepted and join their upper-class wingmates on the field. • TAFCW leads and organizes the annual "Recognition" event, a rigorous and traditional rite of passage for fourth-class (freshman) cadets, testing their knowledge, physical fitness, and resolve. • Many Air Force traditions are preserved by TAFCW, including the “Run to the Rock,” “Spirit Missions,” and the “Contrails” knowledge book memorization. • The Cadet Wing has its own official mascot, the falcon, and the organization is responsible for the care and presentation of the birds during athletic and ceremonial events. • TAFCW is central to the leadership development program at USAFA, allowing cadets to rotate through a variety of leadership positions and gain hands-on experience before commissioning as officers. • Cadets in TAFCW have gone on to become astronauts, generals, and even Olympic athletes, making the organization a launchpad for some of the U.S. Air Force’s most distinguished leaders.
