RMAF Butterworth

• Established During WWII: RMAF Butterworth was originally built by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1941 as a strategic airfield during World War II. • Japanese Occupation: The airfield was captured and used by the Japanese Imperial forces during their occupation of Malaya from 1942 to 1945. • RAF Stronghold in the Malayan Emergency: After WWII, Butterworth served as a key RAF base during the Malayan Emergency (1948–1960), hosting fighter and bomber squadrons engaged in counter-insurgency operations. • Part of the Far East Air Force: In the post-war period, RMAF Butterworth became a major hub for the RAF's Far East Air Force, supporting British and Commonwealth military operations across Southeast Asia. • Involvement in the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation: The base played a significant role during the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation (Konfrontasi) from 1963 to 1966, hosting fighter jets and surveillance missions. • Handover to Malaysia: In 1970, control of the base was formally handed over from the United Kingdom to the Royal Malaysian Air Force, marking a significant moment in Malaysia’s military history. • Ongoing Australian Presence: Under the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), the Royal Australian Air Force has maintained a permanent detachment at Butterworth since the 1970s, making it a unique example of multinational military cooperation. • Home to No. 15 Squadron: RMAF Butterworth is the home base for RMAF’s No. 15 Squadron, which operates the Boeing F/A-18D Hornet, one of Malaysia’s most advanced fighter jets. • Humanitarian Operations: The base has been a logistical hub for regional humanitarian and disaster relief missions, including airlifts during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. • Joint Military Exercises: Butterworth regularly hosts multinational exercises such as Exercise Bersama Shield and Bersama Lima, strengthening interoperability among FPDA member nations.
