• Origin of MATS: The Military Air Transport Service (MATS) was created on June 1, 1948, as a unified command for air transport, combining the Air Force’s Air Transport Command and the Navy’s Naval Air Transport Service. • First Joint-Service Command: MATS was the first joint service command in U.S. military history, incorporating both Air Force and Navy personnel and aircraft. • Berlin Airlift Role: MATS played a crucial role in the Berlin Airlift (1948–1949), delivering tons of supplies to the blockaded city. • Global Reach: At its height, MATS provided worldwide airlift support, with bases and routes spanning six continents. • Aircraft Variety: MATS operated a diverse fleet including the C-54 Skymaster, C-124 Globemaster II, C-133 Cargomaster, and the Navy’s R5D and R6D aircraft. • Operation Deep Freeze: MATS supported Operation Deep Freeze, providing airlift for U.S. Antarctic research missions beginning in the 1950s. • Vietnam War Support: MATS (and its successor, MAC) transported troops and supplies to Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. • Transition to MAC: In 1966, MATS was reorganized as the Military Airlift Command (MAC), reflecting its growing mission and the Air Force’s increasing independence. • Humanitarian Missions: MATS conducted numerous humanitarian operations, including disaster relief flights after earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes worldwide. • Legacy: The organizational concepts and global logistics network pioneered by MATS laid the foundation for today’s Air Mobility Command (AMC), which continues its mission.
