About Kenzie AF Station

Kenzie Air Force Station (AFS) was a United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station located near Kenzie, Michigan. Activated in 1952 as part of the Air Defense Command's efforts during the Cold War, the station was operated by the 754th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. Its primary mission was to provide early warning and aircraft tracking against potential Soviet bomber threats over the Great Lakes region. Kenzie AFS remained operational until it was deactivated in 1968, as advances in radar technology and shifting defense priorities led to the consolidation of air defense assets.

• Cold War Sentinel: Kenzie Air Force Station (AFS) was established in 1952 as part of the United States' early warning radar defense network during the Cold War, helping to detect potential Soviet bomber attacks over the Arctic. • Location: The station was situated near Mackinaw City, Michigan, strategically placed to monitor airspace over the Great Lakes region. • Designation: Kenzie AFS was assigned the Air Defense Command identification number P-16 and later ADC ID Z-16, reflecting changes in radar site designation systems. • Radar Technology: The site initially operated AN/FPS-3 search radars and later upgraded to more advanced models, including the AN/FPS-20, to improve detection capabilities. • Gap Filler Sites: To cover radar blind spots, Kenzie AFS managed several "gap filler" sites equipped with AN/FPS-18 radars in surrounding areas such as Pellston and Alpena, Michigan. • SAGE Integration: In 1960, Kenzie AFS became part of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) system, transmitting radar data to Direction Centers for centralized air defense coordination. • Staff and Community: The station typically housed around 200 personnel at its peak, including military members and civilian employees who became an integral part of the local community. • Deactivation: Due to advancements in radar and defense technology, as well as shifting strategic needs, Kenzie AFS was closed in 1977 after 25 years of service. • Legacy: After closure, some of the station’s buildings were repurposed for civilian use, and portions of the site remain visible to this day. • Preserved History: Artifacts and stories from Kenzie AFS are preserved by local historical societies and former personnel, ensuring its Cold War legacy is not forgotten.
