• Origins in WWII: HQ AFNORTH traces its roots back to the establishment of the Allied Forces Northern Europe (AFNORTH) in 1952, as part of NATO’s post-WWII defense structure in response to the Soviet threat. • Location Shift: Originally based in Kolsås, Norway, the headquarters moved to Brunssum, the Netherlands in 2004, reflecting NATO’s transformation and restructuring after the Cold War. • Key Role in Cold War Defense: During the Cold War, HQ AFNORTH was responsible for coordinating the defense of Northern Europe, including Norway, Denmark, and Northern Germany. • Multinational Staff: The headquarters has always hosted a highly multinational staff, with personnel from over 20 NATO member states working together to plan and execute operations. • Command Structure Evolution: In 2004, AFNORTH was redesigned as Joint Force Command Brunssum, integrating land, air, and maritime capabilities under one command for enhanced operational effectiveness. • Baltic Security: HQ AFNORTH (now JFC Brunssum) plays a key role in coordinating NATO’s Enhanced Forward Presence (EFP) battlegroups in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland to deter aggression in the Baltic region. • ISAF Mission: HQ AFNORTH led the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Afghanistan from 2003 to 2015, overseeing operations and stabilization efforts. • Annual Exercises: The headquarters organizes and participates in major NATO exercises such as Trident Juncture and Steadfast Defender, which test alliance readiness and interoperability. • First Female Commander: In 2020, General Jörg Vollmer became the first German and the first non-American to serve as the commander of JFC Brunssum, marking a milestone in the headquarters’ leadership history. • Symbolic Sculpture: Outside the headquarters in Brunssum is the famous “Man with Two Hats” statue, symbolizing the strong bond between the Netherlands and Canada from WWII, and serving as a reminder of the alliance’s shared history and values.
