• Origins During the Cold War: The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Southern European Task Force (HHC, SETAF) was activated in October 1955 in Italy, playing a major role in NATO’s southern flank during the Cold War. • First U.S. Army HQ on Italian Soil: SETAF represented the first major permanent U.S. Army headquarters stationed in Italy, fostering close military cooperation with Italian forces. • Dual Mission: Initially, SETAF was responsible for both air defense and ground operations, controlling missile units such as Nike Hercules and Honest John, as well as infantry and support elements. • Operation Provide Comfort: In the early 1990s, SETAF played a crucial role in humanitarian missions, most notably Operation Provide Comfort—delivering aid to Kurdish refugees in northern Iraq after the Gulf War. • African Command Ties: In 2008, SETAF was realigned to become U.S. Army Africa (USARAF), marking a strategic shift in U.S. Army interests towards the African continent and supporting AFRICOM. • Multinational Exercises: HHC SETAF has regularly coordinated and participated in multinational exercises, such as "Operation African Lion," building partnerships with African and European militaries. • Historic Locations: The unit’s headquarters has been based in notable Italian cities, including Verona and Vicenza, with Vicenza’s Caserma Ederle becoming synonymous with the unit. • Humanitarian Disaster Response: HHC SETAF has deployed teams for earthquake relief in countries such as Armenia (1988), Italy, and Turkey, highlighting its humanitarian and disaster response capabilities. • Cold War Nuclear Role: During the Cold War, SETAF was responsible for U.S. tactical nuclear weapons in Italy, underlining the high level of trust between the U.S. and Italian governments. • Legacy and Transformation: Even as SETAF transitioned to USARAF and later the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa, HHC continues to be the command's core, adapting to new missions while preserving its storied legacy.
