• Establishment: Headquarters Alaskan Air Command (AAC) was officially established on December 1, 1945, to provide air defense for the vast Alaskan territory during the early Cold War era. • Early Defense Mission: The unit was originally tasked with protecting Alaska from potential Soviet bomber attacks, given Alaska’s proximity to the Soviet Union. • Role in the Cold War: Throughout the Cold War, AAC operated and maintained a network of radar stations and interceptor bases across Alaska, forming a critical part of North America's early warning defense system. • Distant Early Warning Line: AAC was responsible for major portions of the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line, a chain of radar sites stretching across the Arctic to detect incoming hostile aircraft or missiles. • Operation Chrome Dome: The command supported Operation Chrome Dome, in which nuclear-armed B-52 bombers flew continuous airborne alert missions over the Arctic, ready to respond to Soviet aggression. • Alaska’s Harsh Environment: Personnel stationed with AAC often operated in extremely challenging conditions, including subzero temperatures, blizzards, and months of darkness, which tested both equipment and human endurance. • Strategic Airfields: AAC managed several key airfields, including Elmendorf Air Force Base and Eielson Air Force Base, which became vital hubs for military operations and logistics in the region. • Indigenous Partnerships: The command worked closely with Alaska Native populations, hiring local residents as part of the "White Alice" communications system and in support roles at remote sites. • Reorganization and Legacy: In 1990, as the Cold War ended, AAC was reorganized and redesignated as the Eleventh Air Force, continuing its air defense mission under a new name. • Disaster Response: Beyond defense, AAC played a key role in disaster response, providing aid and rescue operations during events such as the 1964 Alaska earthquake, one of the most powerful ever recorded in North America.
