• Origins and Meaning: HAF/ESP stands for Hellenic Air Force / Ειδικές Δυνάμεις Προστασίας (Special Security Forces), a specialized security and protection unit within the Greek Air Force. • Establishment: HAF/ESP was formed in 1998, following the restructuring of the Hellenic Air Force’s security and base protection units, to address new security needs and modern threats. • Primary Mission: The unit’s main roles include the protection of air bases, aircraft, personnel, and critical infrastructure, as well as counter-sabotage and anti-terrorist operations. • Selection and Training: HAF/ESP operators undergo rigorous selection and advanced training in counter-terrorism, close protection, weapons handling, and airborne operations. • Participation in Exercises: HAF/ESP regularly participates in joint exercises with other Hellenic Special Forces (such as ETA, ZMAK, OYK, and Army SOF) and with NATO allies, enhancing interoperability. • Olympic Security: HAF/ESP played a crucial role in the security arrangements for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, providing counter-terrorism and VIP protection capabilities. • International Deployments: Members of HAF/ESP have participated in international missions, such as NATO-led security operations and peacekeeping deployments in the Balkans. • Equipment: The unit is equipped with modern small arms, armored vehicles, night-vision gear, and specialized security systems for base protection and rapid response. • Insignia and Motto: HAF/ESP personnel wear a distinctive patch featuring a winged sword, symbolizing the fusion of air power and special operations, with the motto "Ουδείς Ασφαλέστερος Εχθρός" ("No enemy is more secure"). • Recognition: HAF/ESP is recognized within Greece and by NATO partners for its professionalism, rapid response capability, and essential contributions to the security of the nation’s air power assets.
