Detachment 5, 39th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing (ARRW) was a subordinate unit of the 39th ARRW, which was responsible for combat search and rescue (CSAR) and recovery operations during the Cold War. The detachment was activated to provide rapid-response rescue capabilities, often supporting downed aircrews and conducting humanitarian missions in its area of responsibility. Operating a variety of rescue aircraft, Detachment 5 played a vital role in maintaining the wing’s readiness and effectiveness, particularly during periods of heightened alert.
