COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT GROUP 3 (CSSG-3)

• Origins and Activation: Combat Service Support Group 3 (CSSG-3) was activated on September 30, 1979, at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, to provide logistical support to the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade and other units in the Pacific. • Pacific Operations: CSSG-3 has played a critical role in supporting Marine operations throughout the Pacific region, including frequent exercises in Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. • Humanitarian Assistance: The unit has been involved in numerous humanitarian missions, notably providing essential disaster relief and logistics during Operation Sea Angel in Bangladesh (1991) and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia (1992-1993). • Redesignation: In 2006, CSSG-3 was redesignated as Combat Logistics Regiment 3 (CLR-3), reflecting a shift in structure and mission under the Marine Corps’ transformation to a more expeditionary force. • Support to Operation Iraqi Freedom: Elements from CSSG-3/CLR-3 deployed to Iraq, providing crucial logistical support during combat operations, including transportation, supply, and maintenance. • Training Exercises: CSSG-3 has participated in major joint and combined training exercises, such as Cobra Gold (Thailand), Balikatan (Philippines), and RIMPAC (Hawaii), enhancing interoperability with allies. • Motto and Mascot: The group’s motto has been “Support the Sword,” reflecting its essential role in enabling front-line combat units to accomplish their missions. • Innovative Logistics: CSSG-3 was an early adopter of the Marine Corps’ Logistics Vehicle System (LVS) and pioneered logistics techniques that have been adopted across the Corps. • Environmental Response: The unit has provided engineering and environmental cleanup support following natural disasters in the Pacific, showcasing its versatility beyond traditional military roles. • Community Engagement: Marines and Sailors from CSSG-3 have been active in community outreach in Hawaii, participating in local charity events, school partnerships, and environmental conservation projects.
