• Origins in the Cold War: The Air Force Global Weather Center (AFGWC) was established in 1958 at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, as a response to the growing need for accurate, global weather data during the Cold War. • First to Use Computers for Weather Forecasting: AFGWC was among the first military organizations to employ computers for meteorological data processing, using the IBM 7090 to crunch global weather data in the 1960s. • 24/7 Operations: The center operated around the clock, providing weather support to U.S. Air Force units worldwide, including strategic bomber and missile forces. • Support for Apollo Missions: Weather data and analyses from AFGWC were used by NASA and the U.S. Air Force to ensure safe launches and recoveries during the Apollo space missions. • Vast Data Collection: At its peak, AFGWC processed over 300,000 weather observations daily from satellites, aircraft, ships, and ground stations around the globe. • Critical Role in Vietnam War: The Center provided critical weather forecasts for air missions over Southeast Asia, enabling effective air operations despite challenging monsoon conditions. • Advancements in Satellite Meteorology: AFGWC pioneered the integration of satellite imagery into military weather analysis, significantly improving the accuracy and timeliness of forecasts. • Largest Weather Database: By the 1970s, the AFGWC managed one of the largest computerized weather databases in the world, supporting not only military but also civilian agencies. • Transition to Air Force Weather Agency: In 1991, the AFGWC merged with other units to become the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA), continuing its mission with modernized technology. • Legacy of Innovation: The Center’s legacy continues today, as its methods and technologies laid the groundwork for today’s global military weather support systems, including the 557th Weather Wing.
