The Air Force Broadcasting Service (AFBS) was established to provide news, information, and entertainment to U.S. Air Force personnel worldwide, evolving into the Air Force News Agency (AFNEWS) in 1991. AFNEWS consolidated Air Force internal and external broadcasting, producing radio, television, and multimedia content. In 2008, AFNEWS was inactivated and its functions were absorbed into the Defense Media Activity (DMA), a joint-service organization supporting all branches of the U.S. military. Today, the DMA continues the mission of delivering timely and relevant information to service members and their families across the globe.

• Origins in WWII: The Air Force Broadcasting Service traces its roots to World War II, when the US Army Air Forces realized the importance of radio for morale and information, leading to the formation of the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) in 1942. • Global Reach: AFNEWS and its predecessors operated radio and television stations on nearly every continent, providing news, entertainment, and command messages to deployed personnel and their families. • Vietnam War Coverage: During the Vietnam War, the Air Force Broadcasting Service ran the American Forces Vietnam Network (AFVN), which became a lifeline for troops, broadcasting news, music, and even the iconic "Good Morning, Vietnam" greeting. • AFRTS Connection: Air Force Broadcasting Service was a major component of the American Forces Radio and Television Service (AFRTS), a DoD-wide network serving all branches overseas. • Transition to AFNEWS: In 1997, the Air Force Broadcasting Service officially became Air Force News Agency (AFNEWS), streamlining airmen-focused news and multimedia for a digital era. • Support during Desert Storm: AFNEWS deployed teams to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm, delivering real-time news and morale programming directly from the front lines. • First Digital Broadcasts: AFNEWS was among the first military media organizations to transition to digital broadcasting, web news, and streaming audio/video in the late 1990s and early 2000s. • Integration into DMA: In 2008, AFNEWS and other service media units merged into the DoD’s Defense Media Activity (DMA), headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland. • Award-winning Journalism: Air Force broadcasting personnel have won numerous awards for journalism, broadcasting, and multimedia storytelling, including DoD Thomas Jefferson Awards. • Legacy Call Signs: Air Force-run radio stations overseas often used unique call signs (like FEN, AFN, and more), many of which are fondly remembered by generations of service members and their families.
