• Origins in World War II: AFSOUTH, or Allied Forces Southern Europe, was activated on August 2, 1951, in Naples, Italy, as part of NATO’s response to the growing threat from the Soviet Union during the early Cold War. • First Commander: The first Supreme Allied Commander of AFSOUTH was U.S. Admiral Robert B. Carney, who played a crucial role in establishing the command’s structure and operational capabilities. • Geographical Responsibility: AFSOUTH’s area of responsibility included the Mediterranean Sea, the Balkans, and Southern Europe, making it a key player in NATO’s southern flank defense. • Role in the Balkans Conflicts: In the 1990s, AFSOUTH took the lead in NATO’s military operations in the Balkans, including the implementation of peacekeeping and stabilization operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. • Operation Allied Force: AFSOUTH oversaw Operation Allied Force in 1999, the NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia aimed at ending human rights abuses in Kosovo. • Multinational Command: AFSOUTH was always a multinational command, incorporating personnel and leadership from various NATO member states, which enhanced military cooperation and interoperability. • Transition to JFC Naples: In 2004, AFSOUTH was deactivated and replaced by Joint Force Command Naples (JFC Naples) as part of NATO’s command structure transformation. • Naval Headquarters: In addition to its overall command function, AFSOUTH also had a major naval component, Allied Naval Forces Southern Europe (NAVSOUTH), responsible for maritime security in the Mediterranean. • Historic Headquarters: AFSOUTH was headquartered at the historic Bagnoli district in Naples, Italy, in a building that previously served as a fascist youth organization’s headquarters during World War II. • Legacy of Cooperation: AFSOUTH’s legacy continues through JFC Naples, which remains one of NATO’s two operational-level commands, continuing the tradition of multinational defense and crisis management in Southern Europe.
