908th Airlift Wing

• Origins: The 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) was originally activated in 1963 as the 908th Troop Carrier Group at Bates Field, Mobile, Alabama, before relocating to Maxwell Air Force Base. • Reserve Heritage: The 908th is part of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) and is the only Air Force Reserve unit based in Alabama. • Aircraft Legacy: Over its history, the wing has flown several aircraft, including the C-119 Flying Boxcar, C-130 Hercules, and is transitioning to the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter as of the early 2020s. • Humanitarian Missions: The 908th has participated in numerous humanitarian airlift missions, such as providing hurricane relief, medical supplies, and food deliveries in the U.S. and abroad. • Operational Deployments: Members of the 908th have supported Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and other global contingencies, transporting personnel and cargo in combat zones. • Training Excellence: The unit has been recognized for its excellence in training, often serving as a training platform for C-130 aircrews across the Air Force Reserve. • Community Involvement: The 908th maintains strong ties with the local Montgomery, Alabama community, participating in outreach events and local emergency response efforts. • Distinguished Honors: The wing and its subordinate units have received multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for exceptional service and mission accomplishment. • Historic Transition: In 2022, the 908th began transitioning from the C-130H Hercules to become the formal training unit for the MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopter, supporting Air Force Global Strike Command. • Unique Role: The 908th will be the first and only unit to operate the MH-139A Grey Wolf in Air Force Reserve Command, marking a significant shift in its mission and capabilities.
