5th CES

• Origins: The 5th Civil Engineer Squadron (5th CES) is part of the 5th Bomb Wing, stationed at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota. The squadron supports one of the Air Force’s only two B-52H Stratofortress bomber wings. • Cold War Roots: The 5th CES traces its heritage to units activated during the Cold War, responsible for maintaining facilities and infrastructure vital for strategic bomber operations. • “5th Bomb Wing’s Backbone”: The 5th CES is often referred to as the “backbone” of Minot AFB, as it manages everything from runway repairs to snow removal in North Dakota’s extreme climate. • Base Recovery After Floods: The squadron played a key role in recovery efforts after the 2011 Souris River flood, protecting critical assets and restoring base operations. • Prime BEEF Deployments: Members of the 5th CES are part of the Air Force’s Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force (Prime BEEF), deploying worldwide for contingency and humanitarian missions. • Maintaining the Missile Complex: The 5th CES supports not only bomber operations but also the infrastructure for the 91st Missile Wing’s Minuteman III ICBM facilities spread across thousands of square miles. • Arctic Engineering: The squadron is renowned for expertise in cold-weather engineering, including snow and ice management, which is critical at Minot where winter lasts up to 7 months a year. • Environmental Stewardship: 5th CES has been recognized for its efforts in environmental management, including hazardous waste reduction and energy conservation programs. • Support During 9/11: After the 9/11 attacks, the squadron rapidly enhanced base security infrastructure to support heightened alert levels and sustained bomber operations. • Awards and Honors: The 5th CES has received multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, recognizing their excellence in engineering, emergency response, and mission support.
