• Origins: The 55th Operations Support Squadron (55th OSS) is part of the 55th Operations Group, under the 55th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. It was activated on 1 November 1991. • Mission: The squadron provides operational intelligence, airfield operations, weather, and mission planning support to the 55th Wing’s reconnaissance, command and control, and electronic combat missions. • Support to Reconnaissance: The 55th OSS supports the USAF’s largest wing—the 55th Wing—which operates RC-135 Rivet Joint, Cobra Ball, and other specialized reconnaissance aircraft. • Global Reach: The unit enables missions that operate globally, supporting U.S. interests and allied operations from locations worldwide. • Weather Warriors: The squadron includes a weather flight that provides critical meteorological data for mission planning and execution, ensuring safe and successful sorties. • Airfield Operations: 55th OSS manages Offutt’s airfield operations, including air traffic control and airfield management, supporting both military and civilian flights. • Post-Flood Resilience: After the devastating 2019 Missouri River flood, 55th OSS played a vital role in relocating and sustaining operations while Offutt AFB underwent repairs. • Honored Heritage: The squadron traces its heritage to the famed 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, known for its Cold War and post-Cold War intelligence-gathering missions. • Training Excellence: 55th OSS provides simulator and academic training for aircrew, maintaining combat readiness for the wing’s unique reconnaissance and intelligence missions. • Decorations: The squadron and its parent wing have earned numerous awards, including Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, for excellence in mission support and operational achievement.
