• The 51st Fighter Wing was activated on 1 July 1971 at Osan Air Base in South Korea • During the Korean War, the 51st Fighter Wing flew combat missions in support of United Nations forces • In 2011, the 51st Fighter Wing deployed F-16 fighters to Libya as part of Operation Odyssey Dawn • The wing's motto is "Guardians of the North" • The 51st Fighter Wing is part of the Seventh Air Force, which is headquartered at Osan Air Base • The wing has a long history of excellence in air combat, earning numerous awards and decorations • In 1994, the 51st Fighter Wing was designated as the host unit at Osan Air Base • The wing is currently equipped with F-16C and D aircraft, as well as A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft • The 51st Fighter Wing played a key role in the defense of South Korea during the Cold War • The wing has a close relationship with local communities and regularly participates in outreach activities
