The 510th Fighter Bomber Squadron was activated during World War II on March 1, 1943, as part of the 405th Fighter-Bomber Group. Initially equipped with the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, the squadron trained in the United States before deploying to the European Theater in early 1944. It played a crucial role in providing close air support and interdiction missions during the Normandy invasion and subsequent campaigns across France, Belgium, and Germany. After the war, the squadron was inactivated in 1945, but its legacy of valor and effectiveness in ground-attack missions remains noteworthy in U.S. Air Force history.
