• Origins: The 507th Tactical Air Control Wing (TACW) was originally constituted as the 507th Fighter Group during World War II in 1944, flying P-47 Thunderbolts in combat operations in the European Theater. • Postwar Role: After World War II, the unit underwent several redesignations, eventually focusing on tactical air control missions—coordinating air support for ground forces. • Vietnam Era Activation: The 507th TACW was activated in 1977 at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, to consolidate and enhance the USAF's tactical air control capabilities. • Air Control Mission: The wing’s primary mission was to provide Tactical Air Control Parties (TACPs), Air Support Operations Centers (ASOCs), and Airborne Forward Air Controllers (FACs) to direct air strikes in support of Army units. • Joint Operations: The 507th worked closely with the U.S. Army, training regularly in large-scale joint exercises to perfect coordination of close air support and airspace management. • Equipment: The wing operated specialized communication vehicles and airborne command posts, including the OA-37 Dragonfly and OV-10 Bronco aircraft for Forward Air Control. • Gulf War: During Operation Desert Storm, many personnel and units of the 507th TACW were deployed to Southwest Asia to direct coalition air power in support of ground operations. • Decorations: The wing and its subordinate units earned multiple Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for their performance and innovation in tactical air control. • Inactivation: As part of post-Cold War restructuring, the 507th TACW was inactivated on 1 November 1991, with its mission and assets transferred to other USAF and Air National Guard units. • Legacy: The expertise and doctrine developed by the 507th TACW continue to influence current Air Force and joint-service air control operations, with many veterans shaping modern TACP and ASOC standards.
