The 49th Bare Base Support Squadron was a unit of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), formed to provide essential support for the operation and maintenance of bare bases—airfields with minimal permanent infrastructure, ready to be activated during times of crisis or exercises. Established in 1988 at RAAF Base Darwin, the squadron's mission included logistics, engineering, and operational support, ensuring rapid deployment and sustainment of RAAF assets in northern Australia. The unit played a key role in exercises such as Pitch Black, contributing to the RAAF’s ability to project air power in the Asia-Pacific region. The 49th Bare Base Support Squadron was disbanded in 1992, with its responsibilities absorbed by other support elements within the RAAF.
