• Origins: The 483rd Security Police Squadron (SPS) was activated during the Vietnam War as a part of the 483rd Tactical Airlift Wing at Cam Ranh Bay Air Base, South Vietnam. • Primary Mission: The unit was responsible for law enforcement, base defense, and security of U.S. Air Force personnel and assets at Cam Ranh Bay, one of the largest U.S. installations in Southeast Asia. • Combat Action: The 483rd SPS saw frequent hostile action, including rocket and mortar attacks, ground probes, and attempted infiltrations by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army forces. • Operation Safeguard: The squadron played a key role in Operation Safeguard, which emphasized improved perimeter defenses and rapid response to enemy attacks during the height of base assaults in Vietnam. • K-9 Teams: The 483rd SPS utilized military working dogs for patrol and detection duties, significantly increasing the squadron's effectiveness in preventing enemy infiltration. • Decorations: The squadron and its members earned several unit citations and individual awards for valor, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor device. • Vietnamization: As part of the drawdown of U.S. forces, the 483rd SPS trained South Vietnamese air police to take over base security before the American withdrawal. • Unique Terrain: Cam Ranh Bay's unique geography, with a long peninsula and sandy terrain, presented challenging conditions for base defense and patrol operations. • Legacy: After U.S. withdrawal and the transfer of Cam Ranh Bay to South Vietnamese control in 1972, the 483rd SPS was inactivated, but its traditions continue in modern Air Force Security Forces units. • Veteran Community: Former members of the 483rd SPS remain active in reunions and veteran associations, sharing their experiences and preserving the history of the squadron's service in Vietnam.
